I have tried to read many UNIX books specifically those that cover the internals of how it works under the hood. I spent this weekend reading (againJ ) about how files get represented in the UNIX file system. Having read through the dense but magical Maurice Bach (chapter 4), I thought of revisiting the original paper written by K Thompson dated 1978. What followed was pure nostalgia and magic of the highest order. The design of the UNIX operating system is captured so well and simply in this paper. The paper is definitely worth a read every time you think that you have been bogged down by the complexity of modern day computer science.
